Rex Calloway opened Monday night's broadcast by doing something no one in the building expected: he handed back the world championship. Walking out without entrance music, Calloway set the title down in the middle of the ring and told the crowd that a medical update received over the weekend meant he could not defend it 'for a long while.'
'This is the hardest promo I've ever cut,' Calloway said. 'I'm not going to stand here and make you watch me hold something I can't fight for. That isn't what this belt is.'
A tournament starts next week
Officials confirmed later in the evening that an eight-person tournament will crown a new champion, with first-round matches starting next Monday and the final scheduled for next month's premium event. Brackets are expected to be revealed on social media later this week.
The company has not shared the nature of the medical issue, and Calloway asked fans to respect his privacy. He held the title for 214 days, the longest reign of the current era.
I'll be back. I don't know when, but I know where — right here.

What it means for the card
Dante Okoro, who earned a title shot by winning last week's gauntlet match, is widely expected to be seeded into the tournament. Mara Vance's cage rematch with Jolene Briggs is unaffected and remains scheduled.
